Lorne to Kennett River

The pier at Lorne is visible in upper right hand portion of the image. The prominent hill above the pier is Teddy's Lookout. This lookout gives spectacular views along the Great Ocean Road and overlooks the St George River. The Great Ocean Road Townships of Separation Creek and Wye River are located close together in middle bottom third of the image and Kennett River at bottom of the image. The dark cleft(3rd Inlet from Lorne) is mouth of the Cumberland River on the Great Ocean Road. The high sculptured cliff just before the mouth are the origin of the darkness on the image. Mt.Defiance, the location of a famous lookout on the Great Ocean Road is the next large hill after Cumberland River approximately halfway between Lorne and Wye River. The smudge on coast near Separation Creek is Artillery Rocks.

Great Ocean Road Facts

Lorne Wye River Kennett River

Wye River is located on the Great ocean Road and is home to approximately 150 people.
Kennett River is located on the Great Ocean Road and is home to approximately 40 people.
Wye River was first occupied by white settlers Alex and Donald MacRea and their cousin Alex MacLennan in 1882. Alex MacLennan later settled at Kennett River
. Wye River Post office opened in 1914. Kennett River Post Office opened in 1938 and closed 1964.
Lorne, Wye River and Kennett River have patrolled surf beaches and are protected from prevailing South westerly weather.
The Great Otway National Park forms a backdrop to the Great Ocean Road towns of Lorne, Wye River and Kennett River and there are a number of forest tracks that give good access to the park and the Benwerrin Road along the spine of the Otway Ranges where it is possible to return to the Great Ocean Road at one of the other towns.
No lives were lost when the JB Godfrey was wrecked in 1891 between Jameson River and Wye River however 5 men were drowned later trying to salvage goods from the wreck. There is a viewing platform were the wreck can be seen at low tide and a grave site on the Great Ocean Road.
The Great Ocean Road trust stated that constructing the Great Ocean Road from Lorne incorporating Wye River, Kennett River, Cape Paton through to Apollo Bay was the most difficult to construct and took the longest time to complete.
