In
1834 Portland was the first full time settlement in the State of
Victoria. It has an tourist walk covering approximately 200 historic
building. It had a population of approximately 10000 people and has
industries including Aluminium Smelter, Engineering, Fishing, Wind
Farms, timber and Grains, Sheep and Beef. The fishing at Portland is
excellent including King George Whiting and Blue Fin tuna over 100
kilograms in size. It has a spectacular coast line including Cape
Nelson and
Cape Bridgewater and whale and seal watching tours. In the summer
months the magnificent Blue Whales come close into shore and is a once
in a lifetime experience to see. The 250 kilometre Great South West
also walk starts in Portland
